Release Date: 04 Nov 2017

Director: Pavel Sorokin

George Balanchine's stylish ballet triptych, brilliantly evoking the sparkle of rubies, emeralds and diamonds.

As glittering as the gems that inspired it, this elegant three-act abstract ballet masterpiece is a testament to the virtuoso talents of choreographer George Balanchine. Russian-born co-founder of the New York City Ballet, Balanchine has been described as the father of American ballet. The artistry of jewellery designer Claude Arpels inspired him to create a trio of distinct movements revealing the essence of each precious stone, while also evoking three very different ballet styles. 'Emeralds' was conceived as a tribute to the French romantic school, with music by Gabriel Faure. The suitably fiery and energetic 'Rubies' taps in to the rich tradition of jazz-age Broadway musicals, with music by Stravinsky. 'Diamonds' honours the grandeur of Imperial Russia and St. Petersburg's Maryinsky Theater, choreographed brilliantly to the music of Tchaikovsky. It all adds up to a timeless masterclass in the many luminous facets of classical ballet.

Director: Antonio Pappano

Cast: Jonas Kaufmann, Maria Agresta, Ludovic Tezier

Renowned tenor Jonas Kaufmann makes his role debut in a new production of Verdi's passionate opera.

Often cited as his greatest and most mature work, Verdi's penultimate opera is a brilliant interpretation of Shakespeare's great tragedy of jealousy, deception and murder. It provides a powerful and poignant musical language for the story of Venetian general Otello, who descends into madness after being tricked by envious Iago into believing that his bride Desdemona is having an affair. Its many highlights include Otello and Desdemona's rapturous love duet and Desdemona's haunting 'Willow Song'. Drawing on the full forces of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, the Royal Opera Chorus and a stellar line-up of principal singers, this new production by Olivier Award-winning director Keith Warner sees world famous tenor Jonas Kaufmann make his role debut as Otello. Soprano Maria Agresta will be his Desdemona and baritone Ludovic Tezier his nemesis, Iago. The conductor is Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano.

The Royal Ballet's anniversary celebrations conclude with a tribute to the great Frederick Ashton

The exceptional series of performances to mark the Royal Ballet's 70 years at the Royal Opera House draws to a close with a mixed programme highlighting the creative vision of founding choreographer Frederick Ashton. Choreographed to music by Mendelssohn, the one-act ballet 'The Dream' is a skilfully abridged version of Shakespeare's riotously comic A Midsummer Night's Dream. Set to Franck's brooding 'Variations Symphoniques', 'Symphonic Variations' is both historically and artistically significant. This remarkable celebration of pure movement was Ashton's first post-WWII work and one of the first to be performed on the ROH's huge main stage in 1946. Finally, 'Marguerite and Armand' is inspired by the 19th century novel 'La Dame aux Camelias', which also formed the basis of Verdi's 'La Traviata', and was created by Ashton specifically for Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev in 1963.

Cast: Ermonela Jaho. Marcelo Puente, Scott Hendricks, Elizabeth Deshong

Antonio Pappano conducts a superb cast in this ravishing production of Puccini's heart-rending opera.

Puccini's story of loving geisha Cio-Cio San's tragic relationship with callous American naval officer B.F. Pinkerton is one of the world's most popular operas. Set against an exotic Nagasaki backdrop drawn from 19th century western artists' romanticised view of Japan, it's a heart-breaking tale of love, honour and betrayal played out to a magnificently evocative score. Among the many highlights are such lyrical passages as the fabulous Humming chorus, Cio-Cio San’s seduction by Pinkerton, and, of course, her wonderful, impassioned aria 'Un bel di'. Moshe Leiser and Patrice Caurier's stunningly beautiful production features acclaimed Albanian soprano Ermonela Jaho singing the title role for the first time at Covent Garden, with exciting young tenor Marcelo Puente as Pinkerton. The conductor is Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano, who's renowned for his interpretations of Italian opera.

Director: D. A. Pennebaker

Cast: David Bowie, Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, Mick Woodmansy, Angie Bowie, Ringo Starr

Directed by pioneering rock film-maker D.A. Pennebaker, this documentary and concert film captures Bowie and his band, The Spiders From Mars, performing at London’s Hammersmith Odeon on July 3, 1973. It was at this now-infamous concert that Bowie made a sudden announcement, shocking fans and media alike by stating “it’s the last show we’ll ever do”. Rather than marking his withdrawal from music, his declaration signalled the retirement of the Ziggy Stardust persona, and the end of a hugely influential chapter in Bowie’s own story.

In addition to the concert movie, the evening will include a new film produced by MOJO magazine exclusively for these screenings. This film will feature MOJO’s Editor-In-Chief Phil Alexander in conversation with The Spiders From Mars drummer Woody Woodmansey, whose own acclaimed memoir, My Life With Bowie: Spider From Mars, has just been published by Sidgwick & Jackson. As well as re-living that fateful night in 1973, Woody will provide further insight into what he describes as “the adventure of a lifetime.”

The Royal Ballet's magical, much-loved landmark production celebrates its 70th anniversary.

Back in 1946, as London was still emerging from the rubble of the Blitz, the Royal Ballet re-opened the Royal Opera House with its sumptuous production of The Sleeping Beauty. Marking a new era of ballet in London, this boasted the legendary Margot Fonteyn dancing the role of Aurora. Such was the ballet's enormous popular success that it was revived ten years ago by Monica Mason and Christopher Newton to mark the company's 75th birthday. Oliver Messel’s gorgeous original set designs were stunningly re-imagined by Peter Farmer in what has become a continuously evolving work whose bedrock is a perfect marriage of Tchaikovsky's passionate, intense music and Marius Petipa's stunning choreography. Seventy years on from that post-war triumph, this perennial favourite continues to enchant audiences young and old with its fairytale world of princesses, fairy godmothers and magical spells.
